Behind the Seams | November 2024

New traditions.

November has flown by and it's hard to believe the holidays are only a few weeks away. All things gift giving and holiday decorating are, of course, on the brain...

A new-ish tradition I have been embracing for the holidays is regifting something given to you. Sister, my grandmother, had a closet full at the ready, but that's another story for another day. "Regifting" or "rewrapping" have always had a bad name, but not to me. To me, my most cherished gifts are the ones that have been handed down to me - whether it is a painting or a tiny teacup, these gifts always have more meaning than another cashmere sweater or a pair of slippers. "Regifts" are things I've loved and coveted for a time, but are now ready for their next home.

A more creative alternative that is just as impactful and definitely more fun, is revitalizing the object. For example, you can take a "brown furniture" reproduction chair given to you by your mother-in-law and paint it white before reupholstering it with a great fabric. Or, an old fur coat, can be made into a cool vest. These types of projects give a whole new meaning to handmade gifts. The possibilities are exciting! Battered outdoor furniture painted and varnished, an old photograph in a new, fantastic frame - you get the gist. Something old IS something new, so take a stroll around your house and check out all of the holiday present potential right under your nose. Shopping has never been so easy. I would love to hear about any creative transformations you give this year.

Something else I have started to embrace over the holidays is skipping the annual holiday greenery at my local nursery shop and exclusively foraging for holiday decorations, chiefly invasive weeds. Eliza did an amazing job last year decorating the Mayflower Inn with the incredibly talented Dark and Diamond floral design company, who only used foraged greens.

I like to look for the hated Bittersweet, English Ivy, and Pampas Grass with the feathery plumes. There are so many options just outside and search is as fun as the decorating. Mieke ten Have is my constant inspiration here and a weekend walk takes on new dimensions as your eyes look for branches and subtle coloring to fill your house over the holidays. It's a creative challenge, so all the more satisfying. Of course, I can't skip Sister's tradition of loading the house with paper whites in clay pots, so don't hold me to "exclusively!"

Susan's Gift List

Because you can't regift for everyone on your list, here's a few things I'm eyeing with antique lovers, kids, and design enthusiasts in mind. Happy gifting!

  1. A vintage hand painted leaf tray - for trinkets, drinks, or just a pretty display
  2. Set of 6 mojito glasses by Mariana Iskra - perfect for your holiday tablescape and those warm weather drinks we'll all be craving come January
  3. DIY miniature flower house kit - how fun! I even want to build this
  4. Schoolhouse cotton coverlet - my new favorite blankets
  5. Cherry dreams mobile - this gift shop at the Louisiana museum in Denmark is incredible, and anyone would be happy with something from here!
