How to Mix and Match Pattern on Upholstery

We know it can be scary to decide what fabric to use for your sofa and chair upholstery. It's a big decision, and you want it to look good and last a long time. My mom's family room at her house in Lyme, CT (recently featured in FREDERIC!) is a great example of how to use pattern on different pieces.

She used Albert Meadow on a pair of arm chairs and Campobello Meadow on her sofa. The room looks cohesive because she's using two different patterns in the same colorway. This also allowed her to play with other pattern in the room, like the blue and white striped rug, the Eleanora pleated lamp shade, and the ikat ottoman she inherited from Apple (my grandmother!)

Finally, she layered art and coffee table books to complete the look. My mom, a master of mixing prints, is proof that mixing pattern on upholstery never looks too busy when the colors are complimentary!
