Late 19th Century French Tole Hanging Lantern with Wrought Iron Bracket

A striking and highly decorative late 19th Century French tole hanging lantern. Suspended from an elaborate wrought iron wall bracket of exceptional form. The bracket with a pierced geometric frieze and concentric roundel detail, terminating in a shaped hook, the whole displaying a strong architectural quality and unusually refined design. The lantern of tapering multi-sided form, with glazed panels beneath a domed top and pierced vented crown, retaining a beautifully weathered surface throughout.

The contrast between the sculptural bracket and the robust tole lantern gives the piece great presence, while the heavily oxidised surface and untouched condition add to its atmosphere and decorative appeal. A piece with real character, equally suited to an interior setting or covered exterior use.

A particularly unusual example, valued as much for the strength of its silhouette and design as for its function.

Circa 1890.
